Rebels With a Cause
The October Rebellion in London, which begins today, is part of a planned series of Extinction Rebellion actions taking place in more than 60 cities, including New York, Buenos Aires and Delhi. It follows a rise in concern about the escalating ecological emergency, which resulted in millions of people taking part in a global climate strike back in September.
Starting on Monday 7th October and continuing for as long as it takes, Extinction Rebellion and allied movements will peacefully shut down Westminster in Central London and build pressure with satellite actions until the UK Government takes meaningful and decisive action on the climate and ecological emergency.
“We have seen protest movements on climate change before, but they haven’t attracted anywhere near as many people or had as much impact,” Clare Saunders, professor in environmental politics at Exeter University.
The purpose of the rebellion is to use mass participation civil disobedience to put pressure on the UK Government to achieve the real emergency action needed to tackle the crisis.
Activists will stop traffic from around 9am onwards at 12 different sites around parliament, including Trafalgar Square, Horse Guards Parade, the Mall, Victoria Street, and Westminster and Vauxhall bridges, among others. Each site will be taken by groups of activists from different regions of the UK or with different political priorities.
Some locations will create disruption, and provide space where thousands of Rebels from across the UK can eat, sleep, and shape our future together. There will be suggested systems for onsite decision-making, including when to move, and training to help guide those coordinating sites and helping to run the rebellion.
The strategy is to enable a movement of movements, coming together united in the face of adversity and by the determination to survive, to protect all people, our future, and all life on earth. This map shows the sites that allied movements will be taking during the Rebellion:
So whether you're a seasoned rebel or a first-timer, everyone is needed NOW. The breakdown of our climate and ecosystems has begun. We’re nearly out of time.
